Ford announces Kuga 4x4 cross-over
Ford has announced that the new cross-over four-wheel drive model it is developing will be called Kuga, and has released a sketch of the new car. Based on the Iosis X concept revealed at the Paris motor show last autumn, the production version will go on sale in spring 2008 after appearing at this autumn's Frankfurt motor show. Prices will start at under £20,000, pitching the Kuga against the new Vauxhall Antara, the Honda CR-V, the Toyota RAV-4 and the Chevrolet Captiva, as well as the more expensive (and best-selling) Land Rover Freelander.
The engine line-up is likely to include a 1.8 litre petrol, a 2.0 litre turbodiesel and possibly a 1.6 turbodiesel, and all versions will come with four-wheel drive as standard. It's not yet clear whether there will be a seven-seat option, but the cheaper models will almost certainly come with five seats. Ford design chief Martin Smith said, "We recognised that image-conscious customers for this kind of vehicle want a very individual car in which impressive on-road capability blends seamlessly with substantial off-road ability." The Kuga name - effectively a phonetic way of spelling Cougar, previously used for a couple of Ford coupes - has been chosen for being "short, snappy, trendy and capable of appealing across all European cultures", explained a Ford spokesman.
The Kuga is based on the Ford Focus C1 component set (also in this family, besides the Focus itself, include the C-Max, Mazda3, Volvo V40 and S40 and Land Rover Freelander) and will be built at Ford's Saarlouis plant in Germany.
